Indian Musical Instruments

Brrrrrrrrruuuuuuuuuuaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! Thats the kind of noises you hear people screaming and shouting when they are listening to Bhangra music. Bhangra is a traditional music genre for punjabi people. The musical instruments that are used to make bhangra music as vibrant as it is are Dhol, Tumbi (Toomba), Algoza, Chimta and Sarangi.

Dhol

A Traditional Dhol used in Bhangra music! The dhol is probably the most widly used musical instrument in bhangra music. The dhol is the heart and soul of punjabi songs, without it bhangra would seriously be incomplete. Dhols come in many different sizes but they all have the same shape. The dhol is made out of wood and is a barrel shaped instrument the left hand side of the dhol is the trebal and the right hand side is the bass. Usually the left hand side (trebal) is made from plastic and the right side (bass) is made from a goats skin (although nowadays both sides are made from plastic).

Traditional DholiThe dhol needs two extra bits to make it complete, the first bit is a 15 inch thin wooden stick which is called the tilli. The tilli is very flexibal and fairly strong and is used on the trebal side (left side). The right side has a dagga which is a hockey stick shape but again is probably only 20 inches or so in length. The tilli and dagga are hit onto the left/right of the dhol and a very upbeat sound is then created.

The dhol is usually placed in front of the dholi with a rope placed around the neck giving a perfect position (we call a dhol player a dholi) the dholi then can hit the left and right sides of the dhol and can also make movements and dance to his own beat that he is creating. The dholi can adjust the pitch of the dhol by turning the screws that are attached on either ends of the dhol. By turning the screws you can either stretch or loosen the trebal/bass giving you a diferent sound. Many dholis fine tune thier sound with hours of practice sessions to get the perfect vibe from their dhol to create the bhangra vibe.

Tumbi

TumbiThe tumbi is a small musical instrument which consists of a single string. The single string is placed over a long piece of wood and sits a few mm from the base of the wood. The tumbi creates a high pitched sound and a low pitched sound with continuous flick and retraction of the forefinger when strung. You can create different sounds and pitches by loosening or tightning the string this is done by placing your finger at the front of the tumbi and holding the string down onto the wooden outer piece.

Algoza

AlgozaThe almighty Algoza again is a very small music instrument and although this does not feature much in bhangra music it is one of the harder instruments to master. The Algoza is a set of two flutes basically, one flute is kept as a drone meaning you play the same note on one of the flutes and the second flute is used in such a way that you change the keys on it., both flutes have 5 holes each. The algoza produces a unique sound that you cannot craete using a standard flute. The algoza is one of the hardest instruments to play simply because you have to master the breathing technique to successfully play the algoza.

Chimta

ChimtaThe chimta is a long flat steeled music instrument, the Chimta has 8 or so round steel discs attached to the main flat steel. Bashing the two ends of the rod together gives a shimmering sound by the round discs htting into each other. The chimta is used in panjabi folk music and rarly features in western style bhangra.

House Of Bhangra has teamed up with Bhangra producer Desi Dark Child who has produced the following loop. The loop below incoporates all of the above instruments into one 'track' the dhol, tumbi, algoza, chimta, dholak are all used to create the loop below which Desi Dark Child has produced.
